Organising Your Site : Creating Page Categories

Once you have created a home page you'll need to create at least one category for your additional pages to sit under. You can think of page categories as virtual folders that help to organise the information on your website.

It might pay to sit down with pen and paper before hand and map out the information you might want to include on your site. This way you can decide on the best names for categories your pages will sit within.

Create a new category

Once you're ready, click on the Create a New Category Link.

Type a name for your category. This name is displayed above groups of pages within the website navigation.

Often these categories can expand and collapse to reveal and hide the pages they contain. This can be useful if your site contains many pages. The first part of the Menu State section (Open / Closed) refers to whether or not your navigation is expanded or collapsed when people initially land at your site.

Page Categories

You can set the category to be Open (expanded) or Closed (collapsed) by default. After someone has clicked on a category to expand or collapse it, the website will remember how the user has left the category at their next page view (expanded or collapsed). An image is probably worth a thousand words here. Below is an image of a collapsed (closed) navigation menu and beside it on the right is the same menu with the top category expanded or open to reveal the pages that reside under it.

Finding Pages Within Categories

Once you have created a number of categories you are then able to assign pages to categories in the site. To edit an existing page, you'll need to find it within the control panel first.

When you follow the Add / Edit Webpages link from the Control Panel home page, you end up at a screen that displays all the pages in your site. Both published and draft pages.

All pages except for the home page which is represented by an icon depicting a house, are displayed within folders (which are the categories you have created) on this page.

Managing pages

To find a page within a category, click on the related folder or the category title. The folder will expand to reveal all pages within. To close a folder just click on it again. Once activated, folders will remember their state (either open or closed) when you return.

Ordering Categories and Pages

Its fairly simple to order and reorder pages and categories as they appear in your website's navigation. To do so all you need to do is click on the arrows on the right hand side of the web page manager for pages - and on the left hand side to reorder categories.

Ordering pages and categories

To reorder pages you'll need to open the category folder that contains them. An up and down arrow appears for each page except the ones at the very top and bottom of these lists. These have only one arrow. When you're at the bottom there's only one way to go.

Hiding Page Categories

You might wonder why anyone would want to hide a category? If the Hidden option is checked when creating a category, all the pages you place under that particular category will not appear in the main navigation of your website.

This can be useful if you wish to create pages that are subpages of another parent page but dont want the subpage to clog up your navigation menu. Hidden categories can be used to create additional levels of navigation within your site by linking pages to each other.

The default setting is Visible. Use this option for categories that appear in the website navigation menu.

Adding Your Content

Once you have at least one category you can begin to create pages. Click on the Create New Page link to get started.

Step one involves choosing a title, picking a category and selecting a template for the page you are creating.

Enter a title and choose a template

Enter a title for your page. The title appears in the menu and at the top of the page.

Next choose a category for your page to sit under from the drop-down list. See above for instructions regarding creating categories.

Then select a template for the page to use. Templates determine the layout of your page. Choose a layout that will best suit the type of information you want to include. Choose a template with news to have a liist of links to your announcements appear within the page or choose general page for a basic layout. This last option is best for pages that contain lots of information

To choose a template you must click on the title of the template you wish to use. A preview of the template will be displayed to the right of screen.

Once you have entered a title and selected a category and template, click on the next button to move to the next step. Don't worry, the system will remind you if you've left anything out.

You can enter the main content of the page using the inline editor that appears on the next page. The editor makes it easier to create links, format text, add images and link to documents.
